Materials you need at home:
  • 2.1m (2 3/8 yards) total of assorted neutral solid and print fabrics for the background blocks and border. I’ve used white and pale blue-grey print fabrics.
  • 15cm (1/4 yard ) each of bright solid pink, purple, blue, green, orange, and red fabrics for the sashing strips
  • (1) 1 3/4in x 9 1/2in rectangle of bright solid yellow fabric (kite)
  • 40cm (1/2 yard) of pink & white stripe fabric for the binding

  • Assorted yellow, white, red, pink, green, orange, purple, black & white small check, black & white stripe, dark brown, and blue fabrics for the applique

  • 50cm (1/4 yard) of brown-on-brown fabric for the bears

  • Quanity of lightweight fusible webbing

  • Stranded embroidery thread for the facial features and applique details

  • Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method

  • (14) pairs of small black buttons for the eyes

  • (20) small black buttons for the watermelon seeds

  • Assorted buttons for the kite tail, shirt detail, and beehive door (optional)

  • A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 64in square

  • 3.3m (3 5/8 yards) of 42in wide coordinating backing fabric

  • Applique mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended)

  • General sewing supplies

  • Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt.

  • I like to use buttons on my quilts but they aren’t suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Replace the buttons with appliqué or embroidery when you are making the quilt.
