Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
"Hi, I’m Alissah! I recently moved to Austin, TX with my husband and our squishy lil pup! I’ve been sewing for 6 years now. I picked up my first sewing machine on sale for $60! After it sat in the closet for a year, I finally pulled it out to sew pillows and haven’t stopped sewing since! Growing up, my mom and dad both were sewists. My mom used to make our entire family matching outfits! ✨GOALS✨
I thought it would be fun to share 3 facts about me!
- I’m #3 of 10 kids!
- I love every vegetable under the sun but do not come near me with fruit!
- I sewed straight through my finger once!
What inspired you to start sewing?
"I remember this day so clearly. I had just gotten home from browsing at the mall all day and not finding a single piece that fit me properly (I’m 5ft and 100lbs) I either had to shop in the kids sections or completely alter my pieces. When I pulled out my sewing machine and haven’t stopped sewing since! Through my sewing journey I learned about sustainability and it’s changed my entire outlook on all things."
Why is sewing so important to you?
"Creativity never came easily to me. I was never the crafty/diy loving kid! When I discovered sewing, it felt so natural, like I should have been doing it all along! It’s a huge part of my life and identity now! "
Shop The Lion and ZebreDo you have your own studio? Tell us about your workspace!
"I used to sew wherever I could, my kitchen counter, the floor or bedside were my cutting table for so many year! It wasn’t until last summer when I finally got my own sewing studio! It’s a cozy detached space that I can make as messy as I want and blast Taylor Swift all hours of night! "
What are your other passions? Or passion projects?
"My current passion is my own shop! A few years ago my sister announced she was pregnant. I was so excited! I made her cute bonnets that were a huge hit. Everyone kept asking for some so I made a shop to sell them! Last summer I added cute little sun hats! It’s honestly been a dream come true!"
When you are experiencing a creative block how do you get back into the spirit?
"It’s so important to give myself a break when I hit a creative block! I found that if I push myself when I’m not vibing, I end up making a lot of mistakes and not loving what I forced. I’ll usually give myself a few days and then jump back in with something simple that’s a quick make!"
What does being a Makerist Ambassador mean to you?
"It means inspiring other creatives! Makerist gives us the opportunity to creative what we truly love and I think that is the ultimate inspiration! Watching others do what they TRULY love is my favorite!"
