Materials you need at home:
  • 1.5m (1 3/4 yards) of medium blue-on-blue print fabric for the background blocks and border
  • 15cm (1/8 yard) each of (4) assorted light—medium blue print fabrics for the border
  • 40cm (1/2 yard) of yellow print fabric for the binding
  • 25cm (1/4 yard) total each of pink, yellow, orange, and green print fabrics for the framing strips
  • 30cm (3/8 yard) total each of red, and black & white print fabrics for the framing strips
  • 90cm (1 yard) of white-on-white fabric for the applique
  • 25cm (1/4 yard) of solid black fabric for the applique
  • Assorted scraps of grey, red, yellow, orange, blue, pink, purple, green, black & white print, grey & white stripe, brown, and skin-toned fabrics for the applique
  • (23) pairs of small black buttons for eyes
  • Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing
  • Stranded embroidery thread for the facial features
  • Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method
  • A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 60 1/2in square
  • 3.1m (3 3/8 yards) of 42in wide coordinating backing fabric
  • Applique mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended)
  • General sewing supplies
  • Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt.
  • I like to use buttons on my quilts but they aren’t suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Replace the buttons with appliqué or embroidery when you are making the quilt.
