Materials you need at home:
  • 1m (1 1/8 yard) of medium blue small print fabric for the background blocks
  • 65cm (3/4 yard) of light blue-on-blue print fabric for the background blocks
  • 30cm (3/8 yard) of solid deep blue fabric for the background blocks
  • 20cm (1/4 yard) of solid medium blue fabric for the background blocks
  • 1.25m (1 3/8 yards) of medium-deep blue-on-blue fabric for the border
  • 45cm (1/2 yard) of bright orange-on-orange print fabric for the binding
  • A total of 2m (2 1/4 yards) of assorted print fabrics in yellow, orange, red, green, pink, purple, blue, and black & white for the scrappy sashing strips, borders, and applique
  • (1) fat quarter of white-on-white print fabric for the applique
  • (1) fat eighth of pink small print fabric for the applique flowers
  • (1) fat quarter of solid yellow fabric for the applique flowers
  • (1) fat eighth of solid red fabric for the flowers
  • (1) fat eighth of green print fabric for the flower stems
  • (16) 7in squares of assorted print fabrics for the flower pots and elephant bodies
  • A total of 1m (1 1/8 yards) of assorted solid grey and grey small print fabrics for the elephant’s faces and arms
  • 25cm (1/4 yard) of grey & white large spot fabric for the elephant’s ears
  • Scraps of fabric in assorted colours and prints for the remaining applique
  • Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing
  • (4) pairs of small-medium black buttons for the eyes
  • (4) pairs of medium-large black buttons for the eyes
  • Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method
  • A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 66 1/2in x 86 1/2in
  • 4.4m (4 7/8 yards) of 42in wide coordinating backing fabric
  • General sewing supplies
  • Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt.
  • I like to use buttons on my quilts but they aren’t suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Replace the buttons with appliqué or embroidery when you are making the quilt.
