Easy Chunky/bulky yarn

Sarah Owl was a character in a book I used to read to my daughter Sarah when she was young. We read it so often, we both knew the text off by heart! And now she’s all grown up, she’s modelling this lovely, chunky, owl poncho! The pattern allows different stitch textures to shine, with owls thrown in for good measure!

It is an easy/ intermediate knit, with very simple cabling, so would suit a very confident beginner who wants a challenge, or a straightforward knit for a more experienced knitter. It is knitted in two pieces and sewn together. Line by line instructions, in English, with British/American terms where necessary. Photos included to help with sewing up.

It wiil fit a small to large adult. A cosy, fashionable knit, for getting out and about.

Photographed on a UK size 12, US size 8 model. Fits from approx 76cm/30in up to approx 112cm/44in chest.

Laid flat – Widest point across - 84cm/33in. Depth, from centre top to lower point - 64cm/25in. From neck edge to the edge just past the elbow – 46cm/18in.

Each piece - approx. 71cm/28in x 46cm/18in.

Materials you need at home:

  • 6 x 100g balls of Katia Alaska colour 20, (115m/126yds per ball.) Only approx. 5g of the 6th ball is used, but why not put the remaining yarn towards a hat, cowl or gloves? (Most chunky/bulky yarns should work well with this pattern, although amounts may vary and please check your tension/gauge – see below).
  • 7mm (UK2 – USA 10.75) and a similar size cable needle.
  • 6 x 11mm/ 3/8in buttons for eyes on the front of the poncho. If you want eyes on the back as well, then double this amount.
  • A large/tapestry needle.
